Best Western Plus Hotel Mirabeau, Lausanne
A traditional hotel, built in 1911, this pretty white building with its green awnings is a welcome sight when you step out of the station. Inside is quite traditional too – perhaps a little dated – but there are also some lovely Art Deco design touches throughout that add a bit of style.
Located just a 15-minute walk from Lake Geneva, many of the hotel’s rooms have a balcony with a wonderful lake view. The awnings mean you can sit out in the fresh air and enjoy the vista even when it’s raining, as it was when we arrived! And if you’re there during the summer months you can take your meals out in the hotel’s beautiful terrace or tree-lined garden.
For a chain hotel, the Hotel Mirabeau really is a cut above, and fully deserves its ‘Plus’ status and four-star rating. The service is absolutely first-class, the rooms have all the amenities you would expect, including free Wi-Fi, and the beds are one of the most comfortable we’ve ever slept in.
The hotel’s restaurant, Mirabeau, serves exceptional quality Swiss and French fine dining. It’s all crisp white linen, silver cutlery and waiters in black tie, but it’s not stuffy by any means, although you might want to make a bit of effort with your dress just to enjoy the sense of occasion.
The staff are very friendly and more than happy to help you out with the menu, and you’ll need that help, because everything looks so delicious you’ll want to try it all! Make sure you try some of the local specialities, including fish fresh from lake Geneva and one (or several!) of the local wines made from the vineyards just outside the city.
Train travellers to Lausanne who have booked themselves into the Best Western Plus Hotel Mirabeau will be patting themselves on the back when they see just how close it is to the station. A mere five-minute walk – if that – from Gare de Lausanne, it couldn’t be more convenient.
It’s also on the main bus route into the old town. In fact, there’s a bus stop right outside the hotel, and since you get complimentary bus tickets with your stay, you won’t be stuck for transport.
Doubles from £199 per night.
