Lindner Grand Hotel Beau Rivage, Interlaken
The five star Grand Hotel Beau Rivage makes a strong impression, with an imposing classic 19th century facade (the hotel was built in 1874), large, welcoming lobby, an elegant Belle Epoque ballroom and banqueting hall and exquisite restaurant, all just a few minutes’ walk from Interlaken Ost Station.
Rooms are large and airy with comfortable continental style double beds, Nespresso machines, sofas and robes. The bathrooms have showers over bathtubs and some rooms have balconies too.
My room on the fifth floor was a Comfort Class Junior Suite, the mid-range option between Classic and First Class rooms or suites. It featured huge floor to ceiling timber beams and gave splendid views of the River Aare and the busy train line.
The nightly turndown service deposits different little gifts every day, including locally-distilled bottles of whisky (yep, Swisky is actually a thing!), gourmet chocolates and Clarins toiletries.
The hotel provides free WiFi in rooms and throughout. The Beau Rivage offers a choice of 101 rooms and 12 suites.
Food & Drink
Dining at the Beau Rivage’s L’Ambience Restaurant is a langorous pleasure, with 5 course affairs comprised of delicately composed amuse -bouches and dishes, such as Lemongrass cappuccino with roasted scallop and regional specialities like Zurich-style veal strips with rosti, and the palette cleanser of Veille Prune sorbet cocktail pictured below.
Great attention was taken to match these dishes’ elegance with comparably creative options for vegetarians, while the service was friendly and faultless throughout.
Desserts, such as the Valrhona chocolate candy with banana and passionfruit salad, are inventive and frequently feature upwards of a dozen elements. Make sure you sample some of the local cheeses and the excellent, rarely exported, local white wines.
Menu prices range from 59 CHF for 3 courses, to 120 for the full 7 course blowout.
The tranquil sun terrace, directly overlooking the churning, jade melt waters of the River Aare is a fine spot for a leisurely meal.
The buffet breakfast is extensive, including a good range of cereals, pastries and hot foods.
Veille Prune mid course cocktail.
Single rooms from CHF 199 per night (around £130), doubles from CHF 299 (around £196).
The Beau Rivage is possibly the best located luxury hotel in Interlaken. It’s 2 minutes walk from the Harder Kulm furnicular, and 5 minutes from both the Interlaken Ost Railway station (for connections to the Jungfrau Mountain railway, Bern, Luzern, Geneva, Zurich) and the port for the Lake Brienz pleasure cruisers, from where you can also take the scenic cogwheel Brienzer Rothorn Railway.
In the other direction, you’ll find the resort’s many shops and restaurants, plus Interlaken West station, which is about 20 minutes walk.
The hotel also runs a free shuttle service to or from either Interlaken train station.
