The Old Station, St Andrews, Scotland
Formerly Stravithie train station, part of an old local railway line, the Old Station is now a stylish B&B with six themed rooms in the old station building and two luxury suites in a converted train carriage.
Set in two acres of landscaped grounds which include a golfing green and sand bunker, it’s an incredibly peaceful spot, perfect for getting away from it all. Although it’s only five minutes’ drive from the centre of St Andrews, it feels a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
If you’re lucky enough to stay in the Railway Carriage, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a bygone age. They still look and feel very much like old-fashioned train carriages, down to the sliding windows complete with ‘First Class’ and ‘No Smoking’ stickers, the curved ceilings and the original train doors.
Despite overflowing with vintage, retro charm – they’re beautifully decorated in the Colonial style, with crisp white linen and fresh flowers – these deluxe suites satisfy all the needs of the modern traveller. Both have en-suite shower rooms, a lounge and an outdoor wooden deck, and one even has a kitchen with a full-size hob, while the beds are surprisingly large and incredibly comfy.
When you’ve had enough of burrowing down in your cosy carriage hideaway, head over to the library and lounge in the main house. There are books, DVDs, board games and a pool table for you to use, plus a log fire to keep you warm on those winter nights. There isn’t a bar, but there’s a cabinet full of glasses so feel free to BYOB – of whatever you like!
The breakfast part of the B&B is served on what used to be the station platform, now converted into a bright, cheery area where you can enjoy a Continental or full Scottish breakfast.
The Old Station doesn’t do evening meals but there are plenty of very nice restaurants in St Andrews itself. We wouldn’t advise walking into (or back from) town though, as there’s no pavement on the main road so if you don’t have a car (or want to have a tipple), best order a taxi for the short ride.
Location: Somewhat ironically, St Andrews itself doesn’t actually have a train station – the nearest one is around five miles away at Leuchars. There are regular buses and taxis from there to the city though, with the Old Station being a 5 minute drive or so from the town.
Prices: Doubles from £100.
